The 4D Quartet

Image d'entête

It was within the Pôle Aliénor in Poitiers that Louis Dordain, Gaétan Dupont, Elodie Durand, and Guillaume Duchier met. During their training for the Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Musicien, they began working together, united by a shared desire to form a saxophone quartet. In the fall of 2022, they founded the Quatuor 4D. They explore a wide range of repertoires, from classical to contemporary music, while also delving into world music and popular traditions. Their many encounters during masterclasses and festivals have enriched their artistic practice and contributed to their evolution as an ensemble.

Since its creation, the quartet has regularly performed concerts and has been invited to participate in several events, such as the radio show Générations France Musique, le live and the Concerts en nos Villages festival in Vienne, organized by Guy Danel, a chamber music professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. The quartet also takes part in various competitions and was recently recognized as a laureate of the Concours Jeunes Talents for the 2024/2025 season.

Committed to sharing their knowledge and passion, the members of Quatuor 4D also engage in educational initiatives. They frequently work with educational institutions such as music schools and leisure centers, where they lead masterclasses and workshops for young students.

Recently, the quartet has begun exploring new creative avenues by writing their own arrangements and compositions.

Driven by their passion and dedication, the members of Quatuor 4D aspire to continue developing their ensemble while exploring new sounds and musical horizons. Their goal is to share their love of music with an ever-growing audience by performing at a variety of events.

The 4D

Portrait 1
Louis Dordain
Soprano saxophone
Originally from southern Isère, Louis Dordain discovered his passion for the saxophone at the age of eight at the La Mure Music School (38). Driven by great musical curiosity, he explored multiple genres, including jazz, contemporary music, wind orchestra, saxophone quartet, and ensemble, while also studying percussion. His journey led him to the Grenoble Conservatory, where he trained for five years under Alexandre Doisy and Laurence Brevet, while simultaneously pursuing scientific studies with a DUT in Physical Measurements. During this time, he performed as both an orchestral and solo musician, but his main interest lay in chamber music. In 2021, Louis began teaching the saxophone and co-founded the Sextuor Isatis. After earning his DEM from the Grenoble Conservatory, he joined the Pôle Aliénor in Poitiers (86) in 2022 to prepare for the Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Musicien and a degree in musicology. There, he refined his mastery of the soprano and baritone saxophones under the guidance of Gilles Tressos and Christophe Bois while participating in numerous masterclasses. Still passionate about chamber music, he co-founded the Quatuor 4D in 2022, where he plays the soprano saxophone, and in 2024, the Trio Candela, in which he replaces the cello with the baritone saxophone to explore the repertoire of piano and string trios.

Gaétan Dupont
Alto saxophone
Originally from Bergerac in Dordogne, Gaétan Dupont began playing the saxophone at the age of six and spent ten years training in street music before joining the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental of Dordogne in 2015, studying under Didier Dupuy. After obtaining his high school diploma, he continued his studies at the François Rabelais Faculty of Musicology in Tours, in partnership with the Conservatoire Francis Poulenc, where he honed his saxophone skills with Christophe Bois and studied orchestral conducting with Gwennolé Rufet. Graduating in saxophone (Diplôme d’Études Musicales and first prize in advanced studies), Gaétan joined the Pôle Aliénor in Poitiers in 2022 to prepare for the Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Musicien, studying under Gilles Tressos and Christophe Bois. In 2023, he performed as a solo saxophonist with the Symphony Orchestra of the Tours Conservatory, playing Escapades by John Williams at the Grand Théâtre de Tours. Alongside his performance career, he is dedicated to teaching and has been training for the Diplôme d’État in saxophone instruction since 2023. In November 2024, he will join the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental of Bergerac as a saxophone teacher. Still passionate about conducting, he earned his Diplôme d’Études Musicales in this discipline in 2024 and is regularly invited to conduct at concerts and workshops. In parallel with his studies and teaching activities, Gaétan founded the Quatuor 4D in 2022, a saxophone quartet in which he plays the alto saxophone, continuing his artistic commitment and passion for ensemble music.

Elodie Durand
Tenor saxophone
Coming from a family of musicians, Elodie Durand began learning music at the age of 6 at the Union Musicale in Saint Marcel (71) and started playing the saxophone the following year. Passionate about arranging from a young age, she rewrote pop music pieces for the family ensemble. She continued her saxophone studies at the Conservatory of Chalon-sur-Saône (71) in the class of Jean-Luc MITEAU. After obtaining her high school diploma, she pursued both her academic and musical studies at the IUT of Annecy-le-Vieux and the Conservatory of Annecy (74), where she simultaneously worked on a DUT in Physical Measurements and her saxophone practice in the Preparatory Class for Higher Education under the guidance of Fabrizio MANCUSO. It was at the Conservatory of Annecy that Elodie took her first steps in chamber music, particularly in ensemble and saxophone quartet playing. Still interested in arranging and creating, she sought to refine her craft by taking courses in composition, orchestration, contemporary composition, and conducting with Vincent MAGNON, Boris CLOUTEAU, and Mathieu CHARRIERE. As part of these courses, she participated in numerous arrangement, orchestration, and creation projects, enriching her artistic experiences. In June 2022, Elodie obtained her Diplôme d’Établissement Musical in Saxophone and was admitted to the Pôle Aliénor in Poitiers (86) in September 2022, where she is currently preparing her Diplôme National Supérieur Professionnel de Musicien in the class of Gilles TRESSOS and Christophe BOIS. She is also pursuing a degree in musicology at the University of Poitiers and taking composition and writing courses at the Conservatory of Poitiers in the class of Jean-Luc DEFONTAINE. With a desire to play in a saxophone quartet, she co-founded the Quatuor 4D with her colleagues in the fall of 2022, where she plays the tenor saxophone. Since then, they have performed numerous concerts and participated in various festivals as well as working with music schools and other educational structures. In August 2023, she took part in a composition workshop with Peter SWINNEN, which enabled her to complete a composition dedicated to her quartet, her main source of inspiration.
Portrait 4
Guillaume Duchier
Baritone saxophone
Guillaume Duchier started playing the saxophone at the age of 7 at the Conservatory of Montluçon. He trained there until obtaining his DEM under Jean-François Roche, thriving particularly in collective music, including the wind orchestra and the Montluçon saxophone ensemble. He then moved to Poitiers, where he joined the Pôle Supérieur de Musique, obtaining his DNSPM in 2024, and is currently pursuing training for the Diplôme d'État in music teaching. During his higher studies, Guillaume was drawn to group playing, especially saxophone quartets. Encouraged by his teachers Gilles Tressos and Christophe Bois, he joined the Quatuor 4D as the baritone saxophonist in 2022. In parallel, Guillaume began teaching in 2019, both in associative structures and as a substitute in departmental conservatories. He has led several projects, including the Saxofun departmental workshop, as well as concerts, masterclasses, and educational interventions with the Quatuor 4D.
